CULTURE IN DECAY

A body of work examining the erosion of cultural memory, mythology, and identity through layered surfaces, fragmentation, and material transformation. Blending abstraction with traces of music history, cinema, celebrity iconography, and distressed Americana, Culture in Decay investigates the emotional residue left behind by spectacle, nostalgia, and collective obsession. Through accumulation, concealment, corrosion, and excavation, these works function as contemporary relics, suspended between reverence and deterioration.

Influenced by the visual language of faded film, worn ephemera, oxidized surfaces, and architectural decay, the series explores the tension between permanence and disappearance, asking what remains as cultural symbols lose clarity and dissolve into atmosphere and memory.

Familiar imagery emerges only partially, fractured and obscured through layered texture and visual erosion. Figures become ghostlike artifacts of longing, excess, transformation, and emotional inheritance, simultaneously iconic and impermanent.

While rooted in contemporary cultural imagery, the work is approached through a materially driven process informed by abstraction, rhythm, and surface archaeology. Each piece exists as both excavation and reconstruction, where deterioration itself becomes an active compositional force.

Through this tension between myth and decay, the series reflects on the fragility of collective memory and the shifting emotional architecture of contemporary culture.
